On October 20, 1944, the U.S. Navy landed four Army divisions ashore on Leyte. This came a little over two years to the date of the first U.S. counteroffensive in the Pacific at Guadalcanal.
The landings on Leyte set into motion the long-anticipated return of Allied forces to liberate the Philippines; the last and largest surface fleet engagement in military history; and the onset of new, deadly, and terrifying Japanese tactics – special suicide squadrons, or as the Allies called them, kamikazes. Leyte would be declared secure on December 25, 1944, but this was only the beginning of a protracted, arduous, and bloody campaign for the Philippines.
